Christien Dutoit
Christien Dutoit portrays the people around her. They are tranquil figures made of fired clay or bronze. A dreamy atmosphere also dominates her paintings. The figures reflect inner concerns and joys. They are silent witnesses to a conscious inner life.
Anyone who hears Christien Dutoit talk about art immediately senses her passion for refinement and beauty. She expresses this through fascinating sculptures with a unique and personal character. Sometimes mysterious and introspective, other times playful and joyful, her works manage to touch each viewer individually. With their elegant forms and refined finishes, the sculptures are subtle eye-catchers in any living environment.
CERAMICS
What Christien Dutoit creates is known as sculptural ceramics. Ceramics refers to fired clay. Clay offers far more possibilities than a sketch: its softness and malleability are sources of inspiration in themselves. Once dried, the work is treated with oxides, pigments, and a touch of glaze, giving it its distinctive coloring. It is then fired in an electric kiln at 1220°C.
Bronze
The need to create sculptures in bronze arose when certain poses or compositions were not feasible in clay: the fragility of dried clay can be a limitation, which bronze can overcome.
Her sculptures are modeled directly in wax, opening up an entirely new range of creative possibilities. The qualities of wax as a painterly medium rival those of clay. This direct approach ensures that each design retains its uniqueness—there is only one single bronze edition of each sculpture.
