Biography

Martha Kalma

I create abstract constructivist works, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. In recent years, I have delved into the technique of 3D printing, a fascinating process that allows me to create highly precise forms. This process begins with building a spatial shape composed of various elements in a 3D drawing program. Once the design is complete, I determine how the components should be assembled after printing and add the necessary screw and dowel holes.

Then, I export each component as a separate file that the printer can read. In the slicer software, I prepare these files for printing. For each design, I must consider several factors: the maximum print size, the support needed for certain parts during printing, and the time required for the process. Once all the parts are printed, I can assemble the object. I usually work based on a theme or specific form, which evolves during the creative process. I construct an object and use it as the starting point for the next piece. This can result in either a freestanding sculpture or a wall-mounted artwork. Over time, this has led to a series of works based on the fundamental shapes of cube and sphere.
