“Garden of My Thoughts” is the title Hieke has given to her exhibition in the Meeting Garden.
Within the intimacy of this garden space, she invites visitors on an inner journey through sculptures that balance between the tangible and the intangible. Her often symbolic works, together with this serene garden setting, create a place where thoughts, memories, and desires tell a story.
A work such as La Speranza breathes quiet hope and refers to the power of expectation, while Allegory of Time makes the transience and rhythm of life tangible.
In Zieleschip, the soul is portrayed as a traveler, moving between worlds in search of direction and meaning. With Dreamcatcher, Hieke offers a tribute to the subconscious, where dreams are cherished and protected from the fleeting nature of the night.
Together, these works form a contemplative exhibition in which the viewer is invited to pause, reflect, and let their thoughts wander.
“I hope that visitors – amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life – will settle on one of the benches around the pond and experience a moment of peace and stillness.”
“Modelling clay is like singing in clay for me.”
Hieke Meppelink (1958) is a sculptor and soprano. She has her studio at De Greiner in Haarlem and, from 1979 to 2023, performed as a soprano soloist on Dutch and international concert stages. Classical music is therefore an important source of inspiration in her sculptural work.
Hieke studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where she graduated in 1986 as a performing musician in solo singing. Since 2001, alongside her stage career, she has trained as a sculptor and primarily works in bronze.
“While singing, I often see images before me; I am moved. In vocal art, it is about transforming a feeling into a fleeting sound, and essentially I experience sculpture as a similar process: trying to make visible in matter what seems invisible—this time in tangible primal materials such as clay and bronze.”
Hieke maintains ongoing collaborations with several Dutch galleries. Her work is shown at major art fairs, and monumental pieces have been installed in public spaces in the municipalities of Oegstgeest and Enschede. In 2018 and 2020, Hieke previously exhibited in Gees.
