Jonneke Kodde

Overview

My inspiration often comes directly from nature. Dynamic, slender flying bird sculptures. That moment of tension and movement. The migration to the next destination. The future, the new—but also the return. That is what I try to capture in my sculptures.

Jonneke Kodde (1958) has been creating dynamic bronze bird sculptures for over thirty years. She is inspired by the birds' migration to new destinations, to the future, to the unknown – but also by their annual return. The artist seeks the dynamism found in flight and aims to capture that one moment filled with tension and movement.

The essence of her working method is as follows: first, she observes closely, then tries to discover the larger lines, and finally gives form to the sculpture from memory. She chooses to sculpt in black wax because the material allows for quick construction and easy corrections. This enables her to stay uninhibited during the initial creative process.

In her studio in the Land van Maas en Waal, she explores the technical limits of what is possible in bronze. Jonneke is known for her slender, dynamic bronze bird sculptures that have a powerful presence from every angle.

Her bronze birds have landed not only in the Netherlands but also in many countries abroad. After studying at the Vrije Leergangen in Amsterdam, she further refined her sculpting and modeling techniques. Renowned galleries and art fairs both in the Netherlands and internationally exhibit her work. In addition to private collectors, municipalities and companies have also acquired her sculptures.
